Tamil Nadu’s capital Chennai has become one of the major destinations for investments by the world’s leading automobile majors. Today, seven of the 20 top global auto makers are located in and around Chennai, sometimes referred to as the ‘Detroit of India’.One could say five major auto players like Ford,BMW,Hyundai,Mitsubishi and Renault -Nissan are still operating in Chennai, the shift towards Gujarat is inevitable.
Ford which established its first factory in India at Maraimalai Nagar, near Chennai in 1996 , has a new production plant of Rs 4,000 crore investment with an initial installed capacity of 2.4 lakh units annually— in Gujarat, not Tamil Nadu. Ford said it selected Gujarat because of the state's pro-business environment.
Followed by this,India's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki has setup their new massive plant in Gujarat and is expected to be operational from January 2017. RC Bhargava,Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India told in an interview that" The progress in the Gujarat Plant is excellent. They are very much in the schedule, perhaps a little ahead of the schedule and I think commercial production of cars in Gujarat would start early in 2017.You will certainly see some cars from the Gujarat plant in the market during the current financial year before the year ends in March.
Tata motors and General motors are also ramping up their presence in Gujarat with new plans.
"Gujarat has a proactive administration. With respect to the auto industry, Gujarat also enjoys a huge supplier base which makes it one of the emerging auto hubs in India after Chennai, Talegaon and Chakan in Pune. After north India, western India has the second-largest supplier base with respect to the auto industry," said P Balendran, vice president, General Motors India.Days are not far that Gujarat would command car manufacturing industry in the country with a staggering installed capacities of close to over 1.7 million cars per annum. Time would decide which place would be called 'Detroit of India'.
