      After leaving Yahoo in 2007, Jan Koum and Brian Acton applied to Facebook. Guess what? They failed. They couldn’t land the job. They also had an idea to work for twitter, eventually that too didn’t happen. So, like the rest of millennials, they also aspired to become billionaires by reciting the magical word “STARTUP”. They wanted to start their own messaging app and immediately came up with the name WhatsApp as it sounded like ‘WHATS UP’. On Feb 4,2009 WhatsApp was officially incorporated in California. A guy named Igor Solomennikov from Russia was hired to develop WhatsApp for IOS. The app was officially launched on apple store in November 2009 and well as goes by the saying” rest is history”.







  • CEO and Co-founder, Jan Koum announced that, as of April 2016 WhatsApp has more than 1 Billion active users.
  • Everyday WhatsApp moves more than 50billion messages throughout the globe.
  • Google wanted to buy WhatsApp for $10 billion but the deal went south. Finally, Facebook spent $19 billion (that is more than the annual budget of NASA for the year 2014) to buy WhatsApp on Valentine’s day of 2014.
  • The most interesting thing about the app is, it has spent zero dollars for Marketing. As everyone knows the app is completely ad free and generates revenue only by subscription fees.
